El Periódico reported that the government of the Generalitat has been spending big money for years to refill with sand some Catalan beaches that are disappearing as a result of climate change. Now the government has had enough, and rejects “throwing away money,” said Mireia Boya, Director of Climate Change. The Catalan government explains that over the past 3 years, it has spent 5.3 million euros to recover the beaches of Barcelona and Tarragona by installing new breakwaters, seawalls, barriers, reconstructing seafront promenades, and providing sand. However, much of the extra sand has already disappeared back into the sea.
According to the Department of Climate Action, 60% of the beaches in Catalonia are at risk of disappearing. The increase in sea level and erosion caused by increasingly violent storms are the main causes. Last year alone, the damage caused by Storm Gloria wiped out half of the 5.3 million euros mentioned above. The sand to fill the beaches is the riskiest point in this budget. Local governments always request it to save their tourism seasons.
