According to data from Spain's airport authority, Aena, Barcelona Airport witnessed an 11.4% rise in passengers on commercial flights in August compared to the previous year. CatalanNews reports that a total of 4,974,579 passengers passed through the doors of the facility in the Catalan capital during August.
Despite this year-over-year growth, the figures still remain 8.1% below pre-pandemic levels for the same month. In total, Barcelona's airport has welcomed 33,027,538 passengers since the beginning of the year, marking a 23.7% increase compared to the first eight months of 2022 but a 7.2% decline compared to the same period in 2019.
Barcelona El Prat Airport ranked second in terms of passenger numbers among all Spanish airports, falling just behind Madrid Barajas Airport, which recorded 5,559,790 visitors.
Another Catalan airport, Girona-Costa Brava, also experienced passenger growth. In August, the airport welcomed 289,138 passengers, marking a 32.1% increase from the previous year. Since the start of the year, Girona Airport has received 1,066,836 travelers.
Catalonia's third busiest airport, Reus, also saw an uptick in passengers, totaling 178,651 in August. Over the first eight months of the year, Reus Airport registered 747,677 passengers, reflecting a 12.8% increase compared to the same period last year.
