Date: July 1-31
Location: Casa Amatller
A stunning digital experience, an exhibition exploring Modernism and the origins of present-day Barcelona. This exhibition offers an unprecedented journey through the origins of modernism as a key element in the birth of a renewed Catalan identity. And in the creation of the Barcelona of today as a world renowned hub of culture, art, and tourism.
The Casa Amatller Digital Museum is the new reference space dedicated to Modernism in Barcelona, inside the first modernist building in the Eixample district. It combines the immersion of audiovisual projections, augmented reality and virtual reality with traditional museography to create a new relationship between art, history, and society.
Casa Amatller was one of the most important works of modernism. Designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch on behalf of the Amatller Family, this unique house became an example of the new aesthetics of Catalonia. Other buildings followed suit, such as Casa Batlló and Casa Milà, designed by Antoni Gaudí, or the Palau de la Música Catalana and Casa Lleó Morera, works by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. All of them are characteristic of Catalan modernism due to their use of floral and organic decorative elements, as well as their attention to detail and the use of materials such as wrought iron and ceramics.
Along with architecture, modernist artists explored different art forms, including painting, literature, music, and theater. Figures such as Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas and Lluïsa Vidal were some main exponents of the movement. Overall, Catalan modernism transformed the city of Barcelona into one of the most innovative and vibrant in Europe. It was an era of creativity and innovation that left an indelible mark on the city and that can still be seen today in its buildings, streets, and parks.
