Festes de Sant Roc

Events
Date: August 12-16

Location: Barri de Sant Roc - Plaça Nova

Barcelona's oldest festival. The Festes de Sant Roc, celebrated in Plaça Nova and the surrounding streets since 1589, have outlined a program in which the traditional acts incorporated into the celebration for over four hundred years form the backbone of the festive liturgy.

The current festival embodies both the Barcelona tradition, a heritage of the city, and the popular celebration of the neighborhood that, for four and a quarter centuries, has been Vilanova dels Arcs, the neighborhood of the Cathedral, and the Gothic Quarter.

In this manner, the repetitive celebration of tradition is configured with a series of activities that distinguish Sant Roc of Barcelona. The festival takes place over four, five, or six days of the week that include the feast day of Sant Roc (August 16), including the weekend and the feast of the Mare de Déu d'Agost (August 15).

The protocolized festival follows a repetitive pattern: the first day of the celebrations begins with the traditional opening parade through the neighborhood, featuring the Cu-cut riding a donkey. This is followed by the Hoisting of the Heraldic Flag of Sant Roc. Shortly after, the centennial Cucanya de la Plaça Nova begins, and the sardana dance starts.

On August 15, the day of the Mare de Déu d'Agost, the afternoon is reserved for the Meeting and Giant Dance. Also on August 15 or 17, depending on the calendar, is the day of the Festa del Gos (Dog Festival). The feast day of Sant Roc, August 16, begins early in the morning with the Great Tronada Despertada, followed by the Procession of Sant Roc. This is followed by the solemn sung mass with the blessing of Panellets de Sant Roc, the veneration of the saint's relic, and the singing of the Hymn of Praise to Sant Roc in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi. The day continues with the traditional visits and honor dances of the procession elements at the Episcopal Palace and the raising of the Green Flag on the main balcony of the Palace.

It includes the floral offering to the image of Sant Roc in Plaça Nova, the Centenary Dance of the Giants of Sant Roc in Plaça Nova, the dances of the other festive elements of the procession, the Porró Llarg, the Cucanya de la Plaça Nova, and the sardana dance.

On the last day of the festival, during the children's festival, the Great Globe of Captain Munyon is launched. Moreover, on the last evening of the festival, there is the day of the Correfoc (Fire Run) and the traditional Castell de Focs (Fire Castle), which is set up on Avinguda de la Catedral.

The rest of the festival is structured around participatory activities, collaborations with other entities, and performances: the craft fair, afternoon and evening dances, concerts by emerging groups, the singing of sea shanties with the burning of rum, the children's drawing contest, games in the afternoon, traditional street games - sack races, egg and spoon races, breaking the egg, and the Cucanya de la Plaça Nova.

Other activities include the children's devil workshop, dog training demonstrations, the Catalan Festival with groups of folk culture such as falcons, gypsy dances, stick dances, moixigangues, etc. The children's festival includes magic, clowns, and puppets, performances by the Esbart Català de Dansaires, sardana dancing, and the Va Tocada, which precedes the Correfoc.
