Catalonia stands out as the Autonomous Community with the highest exports
In a recent report by Spain's Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, Catalan exports demonstrated robust growth, increasing by 8.3% year-on-year in October, reaching €8.57 billion. Key sectors spearheading this surge included chemical products, securing the top spot with exports totaling €2.45 billion, marking an 8.8% increase. Capital goods, amounting to €1.34 billion, experienced a marginal decline of 1%, while the food, beverages, and tobacco sector witnessed a substantial uptick of 9.7%, reaching €1.29 billion.
Comparing the current figures to pre-pandemic levels, October 2019 saw a remarkable surge of 21.4% in exports. However, in contrast to this positive regional performance, Spanish exports as a whole contracted by 2.4% in October 2022, totaling €32.28 billion.
Catalonia, standing out as the Autonomous Community with the highest exports, contributes significantly to Spain's total, accounting for 26.5%. Madrid follows as the second-highest contributor with 12.1% of the Spanish export total.
Breaking down regional exports within Catalonia, the Barcelona region experienced a notable 6.1% increase, reaching €6.52 billion. Girona demonstrated a robust ascent of 7.8%, totaling €728.2 million. Lleida exhibited substantial growth, soaring by 18.9% to €272.2 million, and Tarragona outperformed with a remarkable 20.9% rise, reaching €1.04 billion.
For the year-to-date period from January to October, Catalonia's exports totaled €85 billion, an impressive 9.7% increase compared to the corresponding period last year. This data underscores the resilience and vitality of Catalonia's export sector amidst evolving economic conditions.
