The Catalan ministry for equality and feminism is actively working towards extending the right for women to go topless in private communal swimming pools, the CatalanNews reports. Recently, Tània Verge, the Equality Minister, made an announcement stating that women already have the freedom to go topless in publicly run council swimming pools, just as they do on beaches.
In collaboration with property managers, the government is ensuring that no cases of discrimination occur in any swimming pool this summer, particularly addressing shared facilities in apartment complexes.
To promote inclusivity, the ministry has launched a new campaign under the slogan 'My swimming pool does not discriminate,' aiming to create accessible spaces for everyone. Verge, through this campaign, encourages those who have felt excluded from pools to "occupy these spaces and make use of them."
According to the equality ministry, it is considered "discriminatory" to prohibit topless sunbathing for women, breastfeeding, longer swimsuits, or to exclude individuals based on their ethnicity or origin. Verge emphasizes that these regulations should be applied uniformly to private swimming pools as well.
Verge further asserts, "It is simple: wearing a swimsuit that covers your genitals and seeking respite from the heat are the only requirements for accessing a pool in Catalonia. However, this has not been the case for many years, especially for women."
