The Expat’s Guide to Barcelona Brunch

Expat news
Ah, brunch—an indulgent culinary experience cherished by expats and locals alike, especially on weekends. The origins of this mid-morning meal can be traced back to the late 19th century, with some food historians linking it to England's hunt breakfasts, boasting a spread of chicken livers, eggs, meats, bacon, fresh fruit, and sweets. Although brunch gained popularity in the 1930s in the United States, it has only recently woven its way into the fabric of Spanish culture. Over the past few years, the brunch scene has witnessed an explosion, particularly in bustling cities like Barcelona and Madrid.

Now, Barcelona flaunts an extraordinary brunch scene that caters to every palate and dietary preference. Whether you have friends or family visiting from out of town, want to meet up with friends, or just want to treat yourself, we’ve got you covered. Below is our curated list of some of the best brunch spots in Barcelona.

The Egg Lab

This cozy cafe with a recognizable pink interior and an unconventional menu stands out because everything is made from scratch: sauces, mayonnaise, pastrami, you name it. The kitchen slow-cooks pork for hours, and their expertise in Benedicts, especially the Korean Chicken Benedict, is top-notch. There are two spots in the city, so choose the one your heart desires.

C/Bruc 33

Federal Cafe

This cafe is a portal to a small town in northern New South Wales, Australia. It features a stylish interior spanning three floors and a terrace. Breakfast is served all day with generous portions, and our top recommendation is their legendary morning burger!

Location: C/ del Parlament, 39

Ugot

The word Ugot means "cake" in Hebrew. It's no wonder the display case is filled with dozens of homemade cakes and that the menu features an array of Mediterranean dishes (including six different versions of shakshuka). In addition to its amazing brunch, Ugot has perhaps the best presentation, complete with vintage dishes and handmade porcelain. The bruncherie opens at 8:30, but we recommend going early or at off-peak times– it’s usually a full house!

Location: C. de Viladomat, 138

Tartela Bcn

This cafe’s menu features cakes and pastries, as well as sandwiches, toasts, homemade lasagna, pancakes, and much more! All made by hand from natural ingredients, so we highly recommend it.
