The number of complaints filed with authorities regarding LGBT-phobic incidents has nearly doubled during the first quarter of 2023, compared to the same period in the previous year, the CatalanNews reports. According to sources from the Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra police force, these crimes have witnessed a notable upswing, coinciding with the commemoration of International Pride Day.

Alarming statistics reveal that a total of 70 cases were reported in the first three months of the year, marking an increase of 33 compared to the January to March 2022 period. Shockingly, these reports have affected 133 victims of devastating LGBT-phobic attacks, up from 54 victims during the same timeframe last year. Notably, the entirety of 2022 witnessed a distressing total of 390 individuals falling victim to such targeted assaults.

Law enforcement officials underscored that the most commonly reported crimes involve physical assaults, threats, and coercion. This has led to the arrest or investigation of 96 individuals involved in these reprehensible incidents during the aforementioned period.

Reflecting on the gravity of the situation, it is crucial to note that last year, 317 individuals faced arrest or investigation for LGBT-phobic crimes. Of these, 70 were women, while 247 were men, underscoring the need for comprehensive action and widespread awareness. The Catalan police hold 141 awareness talks, reaching 3,462 participants in the first quarter of 2023 to combat discrimination and safeguard public safety.
