Kataezome. The artistic legacy of Serizawa Keisuke

Events
Date: July 7-30

Location: Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món *c. Montcada

The Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món holds a major collection of pieces by Serizawa Keisuke, one of the great masters of 20th century Japanese textile design and the first artist to be declared a Living National Treasure of Japan, in 1956, due to his contribution to the country in the field of kataezome printing.

Serizawa reinvigorated the art of textiles with unique, personal designs that made it possible to conserve and modernize tradition without renouncing it; on the contrary, he used it as a model and a starting point.

“Kataezome. The artistic legacy of Serizawa Keisuke” aims to highlight this unique, unprecedented and important heritage, with a selection of pieces by Serizawa and his main disciples taken from historical collections in Catalonia, where one of the most significant bodies of work by the artist outside of Japan is held.

The exhibition aims to highlight these collections while also linking them to contemporaneity. In this regard, the exhibition includes pieces by Mako Artigas and Yoko Kataoka, Japanese artists established in Catalonia. The former is influenced by Serizawa, while the latter draws inspiration from the Okinawan technique bingata, as well as five pieces by five artists trained at the Escola Massana, who after experimenting with the traditional bingata textile printing technique, under the guidance of Kataoka, applied it in their creations, specially produced for the exhibition.

The contemporary reinterpretation found in these five works by Sonia Benítez, Marieke Peyrounette, Marta Poca, Josep Safont and Moeki Yamada precedes the exhibition, which is set out in a large area without enclosed spaces. A definition of the concept of “Living National Treasure” —illustrated with various pieces— leads on to Serizawa Keisuke's creations and those of his disciples. The exhibition concludes with pieces by Mako Artigas and Yoko Kataoka.

The exhibition also includes a previously unseen video in which Serizawa takes us through the kataezome printing technique step by step, a documentary that helps us to understand how, nurtured by tradition, this technique allowed him to create original, fresh and modern work, while also being familiar and everyday pieces for his society.
