The number of foreign workers signing up for Social Security has risen in the past year, up to July. Figures from the Ministry of Social Security show that around 243,748 foreigners joined, a 10% increase compared to the same time last year. On the other hand, Spanish workers only grew by about 1.7%, gaining 307,172 new employees in the previous year, El Periódico reports.
Foreigners make up 10% of Social Security contributors, while receiving less than 1% of pension benefits. Out of the 550,921 new affiliates in the past year, 40% are from foreign origins. This means that 4 out of every 10 new members are foreigners.
In comparison to June, the average number of foreign workers affiliating with Social Security decreased by 3,365 people in July. There are now a total of 2,695,240 foreign workers, making up almost 13% of the overall 20.89 million Social Security members. A year after the immigration reform introduced by Minister José Luis Escrivá to make it easier for migrant workers to join the labor market, the percentage of foreign workers among contributors has risen by 1.2 points in the last year.
The ministry has also approved a new rule recently to make it easier for thousands of migrants to enter the job market by relaxing requirements and sorting out their administrative status. The government believes that this can help companies find much-needed workers, especially in certain areas where there's a shortage of labor.
Similar to Germany and other countries, the government is encouraging more migrant workers. They are also relying on the contributions from foreign workers to help balance the Social Security budget. Some reports suggest that foreign workers contribute more through their payments than they receive in benefits from the government.
Catalonia has 24.52% of the total foreign workers in the country; Madrid, 20.28%, and Valencia, 11.03%, almost at the same level as Andalusia (10.93%), and ahead of the Balearic Islands (5.42%) and the rest of the regions.
