May witnesses unprecedented surge with over 2,000 Catalan enterprises established

In a remarkable feat, the month of May in Catalonia has set a new record since 2008, with over 2,000 businesses established, showcasing a notable 3.5% increase compared to the previous year.

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE) of Spain, Catalonia witnessed the birth of 2,046 new businesses in the month of May. This makes Catalonia the second region with the highest number of new company formations, following Madrid, which recorded 2,216 new businesses during the same period.

Speaking about the whole country of Spain, in May 10,404 mercantile companies were incorporated, 13.9% more than in the same month in 2022. The subscribed capital for their incorporation exceeded 360 million euros, with an annual decrease of 4.3%. The average subscribed capital (34,604 euros) decreased by 16.0%.

On the other hand, in May, 2,745 mercantile companies increased their capital, 11.8% more than in the same month in 2022. The capital subscribed in the increases registered an increased 0.4% and reached 1,577 million euros. The average subscribed capital in these transactions (574,561 euros) decreased by 10.2% at the annual rate.

The number of mercantile companies dissolved in May was 1,702, 1.6% fewer than in the same month of 2022. Of these, 82.7% did so voluntarily, 6.2% due to mergers and the remaining 11.1% for other reasons.
